Solitaire by Alice Oseman
A girl suffering from undiagnosed depression trying to solve a mystery behind an anonymous troll, whose pranks started to escalate beyond repair
The story's setting is really simple but Oseman really has a talent of writing mundanity in such a touching way. Tori's feelings and growth throughout the book is really amazingly written.
TW: depression, suicidal ideation, self-harm, eating disorder; for full list see here
Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber
After finding out her 'true love' was marrying her stepsister, Evangeline prayed to the Prince of Hearts to stop the wedding, but this wish also came with consequences.
I love this book soso much (currently reading the next book in the triology). The magic and worldbuilding is amazing, and it's def understandable without reading the previous trilogy Caraval. The chemistry between Eva and Jacks is SOOOO DELICIOUS
I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys
Set in 1989 communist Romania, Christian is blackmailed by the secret police to become an informer. He could either betray everyone he loves, or use his position to undermine the evil regime of Ceaușescu.
Probably the book that got me into historical fiction. The tension & description of the character lives is so good! only complaint is pacing (started slow and speed up massively towards the end) but still good regardless
TW: police brutality, war, torture; for full list see here
House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland
Something strange happened to Iris and her two sisters ten years ago, now she's plagued with all kinds of weirdness. When her eldest sister went missing and a horned man began shadowing her, she began uncovering the drak truth of what happened when she was little
If you love dark fairy tales you're going to love this one. it's *technically* YA but it's also surprisingly dark, esp with certain depiction of the weirdness that happened to the main characters. Multiple intances in the book just made me go 'wtf wtf wtf wtf wtf'
TW: leans HEAVY into horror incl. body horror, sexual assault, violence & gore, dead bodies, grief, coerced suicide, bug horro; for full list see here
Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin
Louise, a witch, fled to a city where witches are persecuted, living off of petty theft. Reid is a witch hunter sworn to the church, and his mission is to eradicated all witches. In a chaotic stunt, Louise and Reid were brought together in an impossible union.
So far the best enemies to lovers I've read. The TENSION is soo delicious and evolved so well. Though the ending felt a bit too fast-paced personally, overall was a really goood read. The suspence and the tension was simply amazing. The depiction of witches is also exceptional, making them seem actually somewhat scary
